BIOGRAPHY

You can’t fake chemistry. Either it’s there or it isn’t.

Since playing their first show in 2007, The Subtitles’ undeniable musical chemistry, both with each other, and with their audience, has helped them become one of the most compelling live bands in Newfoundland and Labrador.

As one blogger describes it, “this band has a palpable electricity that sparks through the speakers and arcs in wild blue bolts when you see them live. They can deliver a performance that fills the venue, grabs the attention of the barflies, makes the wallflowers wanna dance, and the dancers never wanna stop. It's a rare gift.”

The St. John’s electro-rock four-piece has made an impressive impact over a relatively short time, sharing the stage with heavyweights like Joel Plaskett, The Novaks and Bob Wiseman, releasing three E.Ps, including their most recent, Tres, and attracting a diverse and loyal fan following.
Made up of four experienced performers, singer Kirk Penney, guitarist Darren Browne, keyboardist Rebecca Cohoe and drummer, Bryan Power, the Subtitles’ bold, synth-drenched sound has earned broad comparisons to contemporary bands from Wolf Parade to the Flaming Lips. Eighties influences such as the Cure, the Pixies and the Talking Heads are there too, but with a decidedly modern approach.

It’s feel-good music with a reckless edge — like walking down a hill on the way to finally telling her how you feel. It drives you forward, and even though you’re not totally sure where you’re going or what will happen, you know you’ve got to just let yourself go with it.

As Penney, a successful singer-songwriter with songs licensed in several national promotional campaigns, explains, the Subtitles take a professional approach to music — “we make goals for ourselves, and don’t stop till we reach them. We’ve all played in bands before, and understand the value of knowing where you’re going.”

Described as the 2009 ECMA’s “buzz band” on CBC radio’s national afternoon show, Drive, hosted by Rich Terfry (Buck 65), and named this year’s Band to Watch by the Newfoundland Herald, the Subtitles have caught the music industry’s ear, both in their home province and the rest of Canada.
With a solid live show, experienced band members and a fan base that can’t get enough of their songs, the Subtitles are ready to move to the next level — with a full-length album ready to record, this is a band that has the sound, and the drive, to succeed.
