Great thanks to our friend and Scope blogger Patrick Canning for getting this video of us at Kujo`s CD release.

We`ve been busy busy busy. Lot`s of good news coming up!

Parum-Parum-Pum! Into the Studio.

March 27th, 2009 by Ruby

Time to head to the studio (Great Big Sea’s Great Big Studio in St. John’s, Newfoundland, to be exact!)

This weekend we’ll start our first full-length album, after three EPS, most recently,Tres, which you can hear at our myspace page.

We’re incredibly excited to be working with the always choosy, sometimes cheeky, Mark Neary, of the Novaks.

I can’t reveal the entire track listing for the album, but I can say that this weekend, we’ll start with Mountain (check out the video here), a song we’ve played live for some time, but never properly recorded.

First at bat is the intrepid Bryan Power aka Poppy. He’ll have the somewhat unenviable task of pounding out perfect drum tracks for the rest of us to dress up later.

Not to complain though. A solid rhythm track is the basis for a great song, and that, my friends, is what we live for.

So, wish our dear Poppy luck…

I’ll post some pics next week!

The Subtitles in: The Westward Ho

ECMAs in the morning.

Ruby, Kirk, Paula and I are jumping into a borrowed Saturn Vue and heading in a 4-car caravan to Corner Brook. We’re making mixed CDs and finishing RPM projects and printing posters and polishing the gear for our shows this weekend. The energy of the ECMAs has made it’s way right down to The Battery – I could see it in Angie’s eyes this morning.

The times and dates of our scheduled shows are listed on the poster above (thanks Shaun) plus there is a possibility that there are 2 more happening. I’ll keep you posted.

I’ll update this as much as I can but make sure to check out Ruby’s blog at The Signal - she’s sure to be more on the ball.

Here we go!

OH! Download our newest EP.

Mightypop ECMA No-Cases

Only a month away and the fun of going to Corner Brook for a weekend to drown in music, musicians and the characters they attract is already taking a good portion of my thinkings.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be writing about what’s going on:

For every showcase there’s a no case:

The team at Mighypop (responsible for bringing in some of the most ridiculously good acts Town has seen in ages) have put together a brilliant 4 days/nights of music including bands such as Matt Mays, The Superfantastics, The Pathological Lovers, Idlers, The Subtitles (!!!!), Sleepless Nights, Sherman Downey… I’ll just post the schedule:

The Superfantastics

The f’n Scene

February 6th, 2009 by admin

In a town where bar rock is the only way for musicians to be able to support their art (minus Amelia Curran, Ron Hynes, etc.) it gets a bit disheartening when you write another song that would sit better in a concert hall reserved for the established than The Rockhouse at 2am. We’ve come to realize that drinking and dancing are what fills most of the rooms in downtown St. John’s – Mark Bragg, Idlers, The Novaks, Hey Rosetta aren’t that far off from Bic and the Ballpoints, The Insiders, Billy and the Bruisers in this sense – though musically they are in another realm.

What are the options????

Here is one:

Errand Boy: “Just some punk kid who doesn’t know anything about electronic music, sampling and channeling all of his favorite music, from math rock to jewish folk tunes, into a 13 track, 45 minute ode to being alone.”

An electro duo with big sounds and projections, they seem to be one of the only bands to come across as professional on Out of the Fog.

Unbelievable:

Their disc is available here (and most torrent sites) for download.

Stay tuned for more options in upcoming blogs.

Tunes for Tuesday – Chad Vangaalen, M. Ward, Gramercy Riffs

Chad Vangaalen – Willow Tree

On Willow Tree, Chad Vangaalen properly displays his tender woosyness for all of us to feel uncomfortable about. Once those feelings pass we are left with a lullaby for full-grown babies. Note the beautiful falsetto where the melody takes the harmony and the hushed banjo. It seems right for a rainy winter’s day like today:

M. Ward – Oh Lonesome Me

M. Ward’s new album sounds a lot like M. Ward’s old album but not in a not good way. The effects he puts on the instruments and his voice have become a bit of a trademark which could hinder any recognition that his tunes are uniquely crafted and his lyrics well thought out, but they undeniably peg him as him (good thing). On Oh Lonesome Me, he reshapes the Chet Atkins and Don Gibson hit that Neil Young slowed down and made famous. M. is doing a cover of a cover and it’s pretty sultry – beautiful. The best part about this song is that it seems he found a fem-voice doubler in Lucinda Williams: it’s the same voice only she doesn’t pull off smoky destitution as well – wonderful none the less:

Gramercy Riffs – Oh Linda

I can’t remember the first time I saw the Riffs but I do remember the second time; I remember a full house of people simultaneously relieved that this kind of music was being made in our parts. They released “You’ve Been Kind”, the 4-song EP, a few months ago and have just finished in the studio recording a complimentary group of songs to be released whenever Mara gets back from Canada. “Oh Linda” is a ditty in most senses of the word – it’s fun and hooky and contains one of the wholly romantically-desperate lines I’ve heard in a pop song, “All I ever wanted was for somebody to come break my heart out”. Me too, Mara. These guys are lovely.

United Steel Workers of Montreal – Local 709

February 2nd, 2009 by Poppy

photo-by-roger-tremblay-640x480

The United Steel Workers of Montreal are coming to St. John’s for a few nights thanks to the team at Mightypop. Their sound blends elements of folk and country with a somewhat punk esthetic creating what they call Citygrass. I have seen their live show a few times up in Canada and can understand why they chose 3 nights at CBTGs rather than a night at the Rockhouse – it’s more a more suitable venue for the “blue-colllar alt-rock” they will be playing.

The shows on Feb 13th, 14th and 15th at CBTGs are their first this far left and we should do what we can to get down for a show. Opening for them are Black Molly, The Angelshakes, and Saddle Hill respectively. So choose your night and iron your cowboy shirt.

Check them out on youtube:
